The great tide of digital reading has accelerated, and bookstores have joined publishers in the race to catch up.
CU Book Centre at Chulalongkorn University is the latest store to launch a mobile application through which bookworms can search for and buy electronic books.
Currently, more than 500 academic and pocketbooks from 10 publishers are available via the "CU-eBook Store" application. More than 200 titles are offered for readers with free download. By the end of the year, the bookstore expects to offer more than 1,000 e-books.
CU Book Centre deputy manager Kriengsak Honsawek said the app not only serves the readers but is also a place for instructors, institutes and writers to publish their works.
The CU Book Centre today carries educational as well as general books from major institutions, and it tries to encourage scholars and instructors to recognise the potential of e-books.
Users can download the CU-eBook Store app from the App Store for iPhone and iPad and from Play Store for Android phones. You can log in with an existing chulabook.com account or sign up a new account.
The app displays books based on categories including new entries, recommendations and best sellers, which cover top hits, top paid, and top free. You can view book details such as price, author, number of pages, reviews and samples are available.
Any books you have bought can be deleted in order to save space and can be downloaded again anytime. The application was designed to serve serious readers and features multimedia and supports PDF-format books. The page flipping is simple, and users can add bookmarks, reviews, rate the book and share their favourites via Facebook.
